Star Trek Online Guide Review
by admin on Feb.23, 2010, under Feature Articles
Initially I had doubts about this Star Trek Online guide give its early release since the start of open beta. Having bought the WoW Rogue guide from Killer Guides which I was very happy with and the fact that the STO strategy guide is offered with free updates, I went ahead to get a copy.
First off, the guide topic is very well structured and covers the major areas of the game well including character run-down, leveling and various gaming techniques. I can definitely say that without the guide I would have wasted a lot of time settling into the game during open beta.
The level of detail and explanation made by the guide writer makes this, one promising Star Trek Online guide. The guide itself is offered by the publisher as a single guide as well as part of their set of Star Trek Online guides. In conclusion, a two thumbs up for this STO e-book.
Star Trek Online Leveling

Here’s an introduction to leveling and ranking up in STO. For more in-dept information and strategies, check out this Star Trek Online Guide.
Star Trek Online is unlike any mmorpg out there. For starters, Star Trek Online does not employ the level system. The game is a skill based gameplay, so player progression is through adding more sophisticated and focused skills. At the beginning of the game you will start out at the bottom of the hierarchy as a Ensign with broad set of skills at your disposable. As you progress through the game you will obtain more skill points, which you will select to upgrade a certain skill. As you upgrade skills, the list will narrow down and become more specialized. Eventually, when you have enough skill points you will be promoted to a rank and this will open up a range of new skills for your selection choice.
The ranking is as follows: (Ensign – Lowest, Admiral – Highest)
- Ensign
- Lieutenant
- Lieutenant Commander
- Commander
- Captain
- Admiral
All players are captains, but that sounds a bit too easy so to add more variety to the players progression, players can choose career paths. Currently, the only known career available are Engineer, Doctor, Tactical Officer and the Science Officer. The player’s career will be the foundation of the character as it determines the skills that becomes available as well as how you control your crew.

After the release of Champions Online, Cryptic Studios goes on to towards the release of Star Trek Online planned for 2010. The unceasingly popular decades old movie series, Star Trek has found it’s way into our MMORPG community.
Created based on the actual movie, fans can expect alot of the movie elements implemented into features of the game.
From an Online Game perspective, Star Trek Online goes by a skill-based system. Players max out skills to go up ranks. There are a total of 6 ranks players go by, which are: ensign, lieutenant, lieutenant commander, commander, captain and admiral.
Players will enjoy the thrills of flight to familiar planets and galaxies as well as novel star systems. Besides flight, the game also features ground play.
